Reducing the impacts of sulphur oxide (SOx) and particulate matter emissions on human health and the environment are a key element of MARPOL Annex VI, Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships, which limits the sulphur content of marine fuels or alternatively allows the use of approved Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems, often known as scrubbers.
Over 6000 large ocean going vessels have scrubbers installed. SMS personnel have had hands-on experience with scrubber installations since 2003 and were instrumental in the formation of EGCSA, the trade body representing the major scrubber manufacturers and associated equipment suppliers in 2008.
Regulation and Standards
SMS sits on Exhaust Gas Cleaning System and marine fuels and lubricant working groups at the IMO, ISO, the European Commission and CIMAC.
Test and Trial
